Instagram is a very popular social media platform and it has the highest interaction levels of all the platforms. And it’s not just for personal use, 80% of Instagrammers follow businesses on the channel. 

Once you have decided to include Instagram within your businesses marketing mix, as with any social platform, to get the most out of it you need a substantial following. More followers mean more interactions, greater credibility and a stronger online presence. 

However, it is important that your Instagram growth is organic. It can be tempting initially to think about buying followers because surely your business will come across as credible. But as these ‘bought’ followers are not going to like or share anything that you are posting, and it is highly probable that they are not going to buy anything, the bottom line is that they really aren’t interested in you and your business therefore are worthless.

Other types of content can include ‘How-to’ info that demonstrates the unique appeal of your product or service, behind-the-scenes videos and Q&A sessions with influencers. 
  • Post everyday - followers are looking for consistency and timeliness from the brands they follow, plus the Instagram algorithm considers your presence on the app when deciding where to rank you on the Explore page.

You should plan out a regular posting schedule to make sure you get your timing right. This will ensure that you post your daily content at the most appropriate times for your followers. It could be a good idea to consider a scheduling tool which will allow you to not only plan ahead, but it will guarantee that your posts hit at the right times without interrupting your working day.

When using Instagram as part of your marketing mix, it is not just about posting content – there are many tricks and hacks to help grow your audience:

  • Promote on your other social media channels
  • Add an Instagram icon to your email signature
  • Tag collaborators to grow your reach and exposure
  • Tag big brands to get yourself noticed and on their radar

You’ll soon find that your audience is growing, so don’t forget to engage with them, ‘like’ what they are saying and answer any questions they might have. Also know what your competitors are doing and engage with them too – don’t treat them as the enemy. 

Growing your Instagram account organically can be a slow process and you will have to work at it. But by doing it this way, you can be sure that as the months go by your business will have an interested and engaged audience.
